Astronaut Doug Wheelock on the International Space Station communicating with amateur radio operators on earth. Amateur radio is the use of pre-allocated portions of the radio and microwave spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation and emergency communication. While a government issued license is required to transmit on the amateur bands, there are still many exciting and enriching aspects of the radio hobby where a license is not required.
